"The Forum Club" Monthly Luncheon
Tuesday, June 10, 2003
The Columbus Citizen's Foundation
8 East 69th Street, New York, NY
The Forum Club was founded in 1989 by William D. Fugazy, Richard Grace, the Honorable Vincent DeIorio and former Mayor Rudolph Guliani, who is a very big supporter—he referred many of the current members—to promote development in New York. The Forum offers luncheons, as well as business breakfasts, on a monthly basis. The membership body consists of business people, politicians, corporate executives, presidents, owners of large, retail establishments, media conglomerate heads, entertainment and sports personalities. Each of the monthly luncheons feature two guest speakers who discuss current events, plans, inspirations, and so on, within their circle of influence. My chief editor and I had the pleasure of being invited to attend and write about this wonderful club.
The first of the honored speakers was Daniel Doctoroff, the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, and Dr. Reynold Levy, the President of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. From twelve o’clock to one o’clock, the Forum features a cocktail networking event. Lunch is then served from one to two o’clock, when the two speakers give their presentations.
From listening to Dr. Levy speak, one can conclude that, despite the cutbacks through many areas of industry, including museums, constructions projects of all sizes, city sponsored projects, “The field of performing arts is alive and well.” He further pointed out that, unlike other areas of industry, growth is being manifested in the for of additional types of performing arts, more orchestras, and various other forms of expansion are all contributing the growth of Lincoln Center, and the performing arts sector as a whole.
The next speaker to make a presentation was Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Daniel Doctoroff, who brought a vision economic super growth for New York which would be built on the foundation of New York being chosen to host the 2012 Olympics. Deputy Doctoroff spoke about a number of visional topics, including the expansion of the New York City Transit system to accommodate the large number of athletes that will be moved throughout the city during the Olympic Games, an Olympic village, to carry on the legacy of the Olympic Games after the closing ceremony and the revival of numerous abandoned lots and garbage-filled rivers into beautiful, commemorative parks to continue the Olympic theme, and transportation waterways, to attract more tourism to the various parts of New York City. When I interviewed Dr. Doctoroff, I asked what made him come to New York from Detroit, and his reply was simply "My wife dragged me over here."
Past speakers of the Forum Club monthly luncheons include Herman Badillo, Esq,, Former Mayoral Candidate of New York City, Charles Gargano, Chairman and Commissioner of Empire State Development, Frank Gifford, Sports Commentator for ABC’s Wide World of Sports/Monday Night Football, Keith Hernandez, Sports Announcer for the New York Mets. Honorable Raymond Kelly, Commissioner of the NYPD. Hon. Governor George Pataki, Governor of New York State. Hon. Elliot Spitzer, New York State Attorney General. Dennis Swanson, President of WNBC TV. Tim Zagat, Chairman of the Zagat Survey LLC, and many, many more. With my experience with different professional clubs, I must say that the Forum Club, headed by Mr. William Denis Fugazy, is one of, if not the best, because many of the other professional business clubs are overly crowded, thereby inhibiting effective networking among members. The limited number of attendees at the luncheons, dinners and other networking events hosted by The Forum Club ensures that each member will have adequate time to network and get to know the other members of the Club, thus reinforcing the common vision of development among each and every member.
The next upcoming luncheon will be Tuesday, July 8, 2003. The speakers will be Carl Bernstein, the author of The Final Days and All the President's Men on "Ethics in the Media" and Hank Boerner, Managing Director of Rowan & Blewitt Inc. on "New Era of Accountability in the Corporate World" It will be held at The Columbus Citizen's Foundation, 8 East 69th Street, New York, NY. The press reception will be held from 12:00pm until 1:00pm, and will be followed by the Luncheon Program, which will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm. Admission for Members is $60, Non-Members is $100. Reservations are required. Call 212-755-1492. See you there!
