Greater New York Small Business Resource Fair Helps Build Successful Businesses

On 10/16/03, Madison Square Garden hosted the 2nd Greater New York Annual Small Business Resource Fair. The fair was the brainchild of a coalition of various city, state and federal agencies led by the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce to help small businesses and entrepreneurs build

successful businesses. This year almost 60 agencies and businesses were on hand to promote proven business strategies. The theme “Running A Successful Small Business” is an important agenda popularized by the Greater New York Chamber’s strong coalition of partners.

The Fair started with a VIP Breakfast with almost 200 attendees. Notables included: William Denis Fugazy, Chairman of the Forum Club, Charles A. Gargano, Chairman Empire State Development Corporation, NYS Senator Kevin Parker, and Micheal Smith, Assistant Commissioner for the City of New York Department of Small Business Services. Other’s partner’s present included the IRS, The Network Journal, NYC Science, Industry and Business Library; Kip Business Report, US Small Business Administration; Dominican Times, Fordham University; Pace University; Harlem News, Liberty News On-Line, Bar Association for the City of NY, NYC Tax & Finance and US Department of Labor.

Workshop presentations included: Small Business Opportunities, Strategies & Growth; Recognizing Criminal Behavior & Money Laundering Schemes; Protecting Computers from Viruses, Hackers and Downtime; Planning for Long Term Health & Wealth, Electronic Tax Filing; Getting the Social Security Benefits You Deserve; Business Tax Amnesty; Finding the Right Attorney and Modern Day Banking. The workshops were generously sponsored by Federal Express, Verizon Wireless, HSBC, Streeter Technologies, Wealth Advisory Group, Aetna, AFD Contract Furniture, Bevmax Office Centers, Entrepreneurial Growth Capital, Greenpoint Bank, Logicworks, Net Tek, Newtek, Nice Touch, Pexicom, Shred-IT, Spanish Yellow Pages, Sterling Bank, Storage, USA, Valley National Bank, Pfizer, PT-Net Administration, Frank Janotti Insurance, Health Plus, and Wachovia Bank.

Sister Organizations, partners and other local Chambers that participated included Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation; Chinatown Manpower Project; Ukraine Consulate, Estonian Chamber of Commerce; Trinidad and Tobago Consulate; Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce; West Side Chamber of Commerce, Greater Harlem Chamber, Harlem Business Alliance, Asian American Business Development Center, and the NYS Federation of Hispanic Chambers. As we do every year, we honored on of Greater NY’s local Chamber leaders. Last year, it was Nancy Ploeger from the old East Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. This year, we honored Dr. Roy Hastick of the Caribbean American Chamber for eighteen years of supporting small business while promoting international trade, entrepreneurship and membership growth.
