New York Athletic Club

At the beautiful and historic NY Athletic Club, the prestigious JAMES E. SULLIVAN AWARD was presented to gymnast Paul Hamm.He was selected from a group of his peers which included Olympic gold, bronze and silver medallists Carly Patterson, Natalie Coughlin, Cael Sanderson, Andre Ward, Jeremy Wariner, Steven Lopez, Michael Phelps, and Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart and karate champion Elisha Au.Five hundred thousand votes on USA helped determine the winner of this award, which was established in 1930 by the AAU to honor its namesake, one of the founders of the Amateur Athletic Union, and served as its President from 1906-1908.Mr. Sullivan was also a member of the NY Athletic Club. Raymond G. Lumpp, Athletic Director of the club and its oldest employee said "we are thrilled to honor this award and see so many women selected as finalists".  The Club allowed women members in 1986. Mr. Lumpp continued, " and we are proud to have them".The ceremony was emceed by beautiful Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Hughes. She told me that if she hadn't started skating at the age of four, she would never had won  her first medal at the age of 16. Her proud Mother was in the audience. The family is from Great Neck.As she introduced each finalist, we heard many thank you’s. Swimming champion Natalie Coughlin said "I swim every day and I love it".Paul Hamm, surrounded by his parents said "I am very honored".  While in Athens, Hamm came back from 12th place in the all-around to finally win the Olympic gold. Each athlete graciously signed a poster with each winner's photo.  At least one hundred men, women and children gathered at the lovely reception to shake hands with the athletes and get their poster signed.  One little boy said "oh, he's my idol, speaking of Andre Ward, the boxer.  His wife told me that even their two children are taking after their father and learning the sport.Arranged by John Hodges, Director of Sponsorship, the evening included videos of each athlete in competition with commentary while Kevin Earls, "captain" of the NY Athletic Club presented the program.

Afterwards with snacks and toasts the guests mingled with the athletes on the veranda on a beautiful Spring evening.
