Linux World Conference and Expo
February, 2003
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City
The Annual Linux World Conference & Expo kicked off its fifth year on January
21st through 24th of this year, representing a New York gathering of the Open
Source community and leading Linux vendors. I found the turnout to be impressive,
with thousands of attendees coming to the show from diverse areas of the industry.
There were a number of companies there that really got my attention. I found
them to be quite innovative in their contributions to the Linux world as a whole.
ActiveState was one of these companies. They have just introduced a new release
of PureMessage, which is a platform which filters out spam and viruses from
emails. I can certainly appreciate the value of this type of software, having
been bombarded with junk email for years. I’m sure large organizations will
also find this to be an indispensable addition to their software repertoire.
I learned that this software will also handle communication policy enforcement.
On the project management side, Bugopolis was there, showcasing two solutions
to making Open Source easy to use: the Project Station, which is a Web-based
software project management server appliance featuring Gforge; and the Bug Station,
a Web-based defect-tracking server appliance featuring “Bugzilla”. Lastly, on
the development side, Macrovision Corporation announced FLEXIm Java Version
9.0, a flexible electronic licensing solution development from the ground up
to deliver the proven benefits of FLEXim to the Java development environment.
Being a former webmaster, I can certainly appreciate the benefit of innovative
web development tools.
There were also a number of support groups there. Why not? After all, what good
is an industry if there aren’t any support groups to back it up. Also at the
expo was the NYLUG (www.nylug.org), which is one of the largest Linux users
group in New York. They do everything from hold monthly meetings to host “install
fests” (I wonder, do they serve iced “Java” at these events?) to just plain
have fun! If you would like more information about joining NYLUG, please log
onto their website, at www.nylug.org.
IBM now has the #1 database on the Linux platform, with 85% more licenses issued
than its next competitor, Oracle. Their DB2 back end, incidentally, costs about
half as much to license as Oracle’s.

They will also educate you about different cultures and festivities.
