ACORN23 Year Celebration, June 9, 2005Citicorp Plaza, NY, NY
On June 9, 2005, ACORN celebrated 23 years of serving the minority community, and honored those who have gone the extra mile for the cause of equality among all. Several people were honored that night, including Councilman Robert Jackson, Councilwoman Annabel Palma, Andrea Stewart-Cousins and RWDSU’s own Stuart Appelbaum. This was a great event, one which served a meaningful purpose—to give recognition to those who fight on behalf of the Nation’s less fortunate population. Earlier at a press conference, Bertha Lewis, ACORN’s Executive Director, worked out a deal with Mayor Bloomberg to build 2,000 units of affordable housing that will built when the President of Forrest Ratner Real Estate Company builds the Nets Stadium in Brooklyn. Gloria Waldron, ACORN’s President, will be stepping down after her term expires in September, 2005, but will continue to advise for the organization. Politicians on hand to support the event include New York City Comptroller William Thompson, Jr.,Attorney General candidate Mark Greene, State Senator Jose Serrano, Jr., from the Bronx, State Senator Kevin Parker, New York State Senator Thomas K. Dwayne. Councilwoman Diana Reina, Council Speaker Gifford Miller, Councilwoman Sara Gonzalez, Councilman Lou Fiddler, and many more upcoming Council member candidates, Assembly candidates, and State senators. We at Liberty News Magazine would like to thank Bertha Lewis, Executive Director for ACORN, and also Ms. Gloria Waldron, President of ACORN, for their kind invitations for us to come and cover this event. Anyone interested in learning more about ACORN or supporting it may visit their website at www.acorn.org.
