Henry Street Settlement
Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball
Friday, February 6th, 2004
Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom, NY, NY
The Friends of Henry Street Settlement Committee has existed for decades. Many of those who participated when they were in their twenties and thirties are now Henry Street Board members. In recent years, the Friends of Henry Street have been sponsoring an annual party that has raised significant operating revenue for the Settlement and increased public awareness. Friends have also volunteered their time in Henry Street programs.
Henry Street Settlement’s programs include transitional residences for the homeless, a battered woman’s shelter, a workforce development center, a mental health clinic, homecare services, a senior center, a multi-disciplinary arts center, and a broad spectrum of educational, recreational and vocational programs for youth.
Many of Henry Street’s innovative programs have served as trailblazing models that have been replicated across the United States as cost-effective and proactive solutions to some of the most difficult social problems and experiences in urban areas. Each year, Henry Street reaches out to over 100,000 people including 30,000 who are served intensely.
This was a great event, with lots of costumes everywhere to be seen. There was something for everyone, everything munchies like Spicy authentic Cajun style fish to listening pleasures like, the Zydeco, band, which featured music by “Dirty Rice.” There were tables with games of chance, where people could win great prizes trying their hand at blackjack, craps and roulette—later on folks had the opportunity to cash in their chips and receive great prizes. There was even a midnight parade for all to join in.
All in all, it was a most festive event, everyone there had a ball. All of us at Liberty New Online Magazine would like to thank Mr. Besty Scholl, the public relationist for the Henry Street Settlement Mardi Gras Ball, and her assistant, Nicole Wright.
