16 Annual Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant
Community Service Award

Dec 9, 2004

Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant, NYC

The Mickey Mantle Restaurant Community Service Award is designed to recognize those individuals who’s dedication are an inspiration to others, and who portray valuable examples of community-minded leaders.

It was a wonderful event, honoring this year’s honorees, New York Giants player Michael Strahan and WTA Champion Corina Morariu.

Michael Strahan was honored because of his involvement with a number of different charities, including Muscle Team, which benefits muscular dystrophy, Ronald McDonald House, which provides residence for foreign children who come to the U.S. to seek cancer treatment, H.E.L.P., a non-profit organization which assists people I their efforts to return to the work force, Restore America, a program established to handle the task of restoring historical buildings and homes to their original conditions.

Michael Strahan’s award was given to him by Spencer Ross, the celebrity auctioneer, known as “The man for all seasons.” Mr. Ross presently serves as the radio play-by-play announcer and pres and post game host for the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. He has also been the voice of the New York Yankees, Jet, and Islanders, New Jersey Nets and Boston Cltics. His active participation with numerous community groups makes him a true champion.

Corina Morariu was honored for the inspiration she was to the many spectators and fans, particularly those afflicted with devastating illnesses. Corina was diagnosed with Acute Promyeloctic Leukemia, thrusting her into a battle far bigger than any of the championship tournaments she’s ever played in. A year later, Corina went into remission, and won the battle. Corina has been awarded the Comeback Player of the Year Award for her remarkable recovery and the inspiration it has been to her many enthusiastic tennis fans.

Because Corina was unable to attend the event (due to having the flu), her award was received on her behalf by Samantha Eisenstein and Bridget Ahearn.co-founders of The SamFund for Young Adult Survivors of Cancer, an organization that actually assists cancer survivors to get back into the workforce after they have been treated. The SAM Fund offers grants and scholarships which enable one to pursue his/her professional and personal goals.

There was an extensive silent auction, followed by a live auction that featured 25 different items being put up for bids, including a Puerto Rican Getaway, a Guitar Autographed by Bruce Springstein, and a visit to Giants training camp.

This was a great event. We at Liberty News Online Magazine would like to thank Ms. Karen Rosenberg for her kind invitation to come and cover this event. Anyone interested in learning more about the Sam Fund may visit their website at www.thesamfund.org.
