Slumberettes 2005February 3, 2005Russo’s on the Bay, NY
The gala was held in memoriam of the late Kristina Fannin, who died of cancer in the past year. The music for the event was was supplied by MIXMASTER DJ Serg, who spun the music for the night—everything from the traditional Tarentella, with people circling around the table, to the cha-cha. The place, Russo’s on the Bay, had about as many bells and whistles as the Startrek U.S.S. Enterprise. The honorees, one by one, walked down a lavish “pop-out” stage ramp as they were being introduced—Actor Charlie Laplaca, who won the Slumberettes Lifetime Achievement Award, Casting Agent JT, who won the Slumberettes Leadership Award, and Soprano’s Actor Vinny Vella, who received the Kristina Fannin Humanitarian Award. Prior to the dinner, there was a most lavish cocktail hour, with so much food that one could have made a meal out of what they had there alone—spaghetti pie, zucchini pie, eggplant pie, cheeses of every conceivable kind (some with priscuitto swirled inside), Italian sausages and much, much more. Had it not been for the heaping section of fresh fruit, it would have been any calorie counter’s worst nightmare. Manja!! The dinner was every bit as elegant as the cocktail hour. At no other catered gala that I have ever been to was there was a choice of four or five different entrees on the menu. I believe the best Italian chefs in the world come right out of Howard Beach. The evening was very moving and very emotional. It dwelled much on how cancer had devastated the lives of a number of families. Kristina, one of the people which were remembered at the gala, died last year—her death causing her mother to die only one month later—of a broken heart. Given the size of the packed-out crowd, it was very possible that there were people there who’s lives have been broken by cancer within their own families. Vinny Vella, for one, told the audience that he lost his mother to cancer. When Donna LaRosa introduced Abbey Muneer, our Chief Editor, she said “here’s a man who had been doing humanitarian work for most of his life. We’re very proud to honor him with the President’s Community Achievement Award for having helped many people with cancer for most of his life. This was a great event. People from all walk of life came out to support this wonderful cause. We would like to thank Ms. Donna LaRosa, the President and Founder of the Slumberettes Organization and Danny Friedberg, one of the officers of the organization, for their kind invitation.
