Tavern on the Green, Aug 10, 2004

Central Park West, NY, NY

Liberty News Online Magazine would like to wish a happy 76th birthday to Congressman Charles Rangel. There were close to 1,000 people who attended his birthday gala at the Tavern on the Green restaurant, one of the landmark restaurants of York City. Some of the most popular political figures from the City and State were present, C. Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields Comptroller of the City of New York William Thompson, Senator Chuck Schumer, Council Member Robert Jackson, David Weprin, Public Advocate Betsy Gothbaum, and many more politicians and legislators, too many to name. The food was great and the band played great music.

A little about Charles Rangel’s background. Charles Rangel, who is now serving his seventeenth term as the Representative from the 15th Congressional District, comprising East and Central Harlem, the Upper West Side, and Washington Heights/Inwood, is also a member of the Trade Subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means, Deputy Democratic Whip of the House of Representatives and a Chairman of the Board of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He was a member of the House Judiciary Committee during the hearings on the articles of impeachment of President Richard Nixon

In all of these capacities, Mr. Rangel has done everything from overseen international trade agreements, particularly those pertaining to Africa and the Caribbean to advising Congress on the Internal Revenue Code and the implications of proposed tax legislation
