National Latino Alliance For The
Elimination of Domestic Violence
Annual Luncheon @ Tavern on The Green
April 26th 2006

The National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence (Alianza) celebrated its second annual public awareness luncheon: Theme being “ Latino Men Speak out Against Domestic Violence”,

“Latino Men Speak Out Against Domestic Violence aims to drive home the fact that domestic violence is not just a woman’s issue, and that the involvement of men, specifically Latino’s as advocates is indispensable to putting an end to this epidemic and helping to create healthy families and relationships”, said Adelita Medina, Executive Director .It is encouraging to see more and more men willing to speak out against and work to end family violence.

Several high profiled Latino’s spoke at this event, Including the Honorable Adolfo Carrion Jr, who was the Key Note Speaker, Cesar Perales, President and General Counsel, Puerto Rican Legal defense and education fund; Commissioner Guillermo Linares, Mayor’s office of Immigrant Affairs; Alfredo Placeras, President New York State Federation of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce; Assistant Chief James Tuller, NYPD, Patrol Borough  Queens North; and Gerson Borrero, El Dairio La Prensa. Commissioner  Yolanda Jimenez from the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence who also addressed the luncheon. “We at Alianza know that the voice of distinguished Latino community leaders will have an enormous impact in getting other men and women involved in this struggle “, said Fernando Mederos, Allianza’s Co-Chair , who was the emcee for the luncheon.

Allianza is a national organization that addresss domestic violence needs and concerns od underserved populations and represents a growing network of Latina and Latino advocates, researchers, community activists, and survivors of domestic violence.Last year more than 100 men and woman attended the first Latino Men Speak Out, which helped Alianza launch its Public Awareness Campaign and gave Latino men an opportunity to take a public stance against domestic violence.
