El Diario La Prensa’s 11TH ANNUAL “MUJERES DESTACADAS” LUNCHEON RECOGNIZES LATINA ACHIEVEMENTS
Mandarian Oriental Hotel, NY NY
March 26th 2006

El Diario La Prensa held  its 11TH Annual Women’s Luncheon by honoring outstanding Latinas at noon on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel at Columbus Circle in New York. In addition, ten young Latinas will received $1000 college scholarships.

The theme to this year’s event is “Mujeres en Poder” (Women in Power) and among this year’s recipients of the “Mujeres Destacadas” award are author Esmeralda Santiago, designer Carolina Herrera, Judge Margarita Lopez Torres, television chef Daisy Martinez, KTU radio disc jockey Jewelz Lopez, and Telemundo 47’s news anchor Odalys Molina.  Also attending this year’s event was a delegation of women leaders from Latin America as well as Latina elected officials including Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo.

“The group of women we honor this year are inspiring role models,” said Rossana Rosado, Publisher & CEO of El Diario La Prensa. “No matter their chosen field, they have blazed a clear trail for future generations of Latinas by demonstrating excellence through determination, hard work, and sheer talent. Our honorees represent the diversity that characterizes our Latino community and make up an impressive mosaic of remarkable cultural and professional talent,” she said. All the honorees are featured in a special supplement to be published this Sunday, March 26th.

The program for this year’s event will featured Esmeralda Santiago, author of “The Turkish Lover” and “When I was Puerto Rican.”  Rosado expresses that Santiago was a natural choice for our event because “her books have explored themes of identity and cultural obstacles we Latinas come across as we strive to become strong independent career women while preserving our cultural values.”

El Diario La Prensa takes pride in its commitment to “inform, promote, empower and celebrate our diverse Latino community” and has established an eleven year tradition honoring over 500 Latinas in celebration of International Women's Month.

El Diario La Prensa augments the occasion by awarding $1,000 scholarships to ten young Latinas seeking to advance their education as they prepare for their careers.  This year’s scholarships are made possible by funding from AXA Foundation, Lifetime Television, Scripps Networks, Health Plus, and Washington Mutual.

Past honorees have been Dr. Antonia Coello-Novello, former Surgeon General and current New York State Health Department Commissioner, Elizabeth Vargas, News Anchor for ABC News Hon. Sonia Sotomayor, Darlene Rodriguez, WNBC 4 newscaster, and actresses Rosie Perez, Daphne Rubin Vega, and Miriam Colon. We at Liberty News Online Magazine Like to Thank Mr George Maya, Marketing manager for the El Diario, La Prensa, Newspaper for his kind invite.
