The West African country of Senegal was the toast of Africans and friends of Africa on September 18th,at the Tavern-on-the-Green, New York, for its selection as the “Best African Country for 2006”, by the Celebrate Africa Foundation. Senegal was selected by the leading African organization for several reasons, including being one of the few African countries that have never been militarily ruled, practicing good governance having held democratic elections since it gained independence from France in 1960, being religious tolerant, practicing gender equality as women’s rights were guaranteed in the 2001 constitution, and for being one of the countries actively engaged in fighting terrorism.
President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal attended the event to receive the award on behalf of his country.“It is the first time that this type of recognition is being accorded to an African country, to its people and its President. It is a great achievement for the people of Senegal to be the first country to be selected and honored out of the 54 countries in Africa,” said Chika Onyeani, a spokesperson for Celebrate Africa Foundation. Onyeani said that Celebrate Africa believes that by show-casing the positive things that Senegal is doing, “we are in effect show-casing the great things that are happening in the whole of Africa. It is a way of getting African leaders to improve on different aspects of governance in their respective countries.”
Also that day, Mr. Ted H. Jacobsen, Secretary to the Council of the New York Central Labor Council, was honored with the Humanitarian and Philanthropic Award
for continually contributing immensely to the upliftment of Africans in the Diaspora.
Other guests in attendance were: President Marc Ravalomanana of Madagascar with his wife, Congressman Charles Rangel, Nigerian Ambassador, Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, and Dr.Annie B.Martin president NAACP, President of New York City Chapter.
It was a wonderful event meeting the presidents of Senegal and Madagascar,we likre to thank , Dr. Chika Onyeani, Chairman and CEO,of Celebrate Africa foundation for his kind invite. Feel free to view their website at www.celebrateafricafoundation.org
