Dec 4th 2006

gloriaHoward M. Lorber and Dottie Herman, Chairman and President and CEO of Prudential Douglas Elliman respectively, were selected by the Real Estate and Construction Industry Chapter of American ORT to receive the 2006 American ORT Community Achievement Award.

The American ORT Community Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have substantially improved the quality of life for fellow individuals, created role models which could be emulated and/or established new directions for society. The two top executives are being honored at the Chapter’s Annual Tribute Luncheon, Monday, December 4, 2006 at the Rainbow Room, 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NYC.

Proceeds from the tribute luncheon  benefited  the ORT Students at Risk program in Israel, which is providing hot meals, transportation, tuition assistance, clothing and school supplies to ORT students whose families are facing financial difficulties.

“We are delighted to have this chance to recognize Howard and Dottie for the remarkable success they’ve had developing Prudential Douglas Elliman into a trend-setter and market leader in New York’s fiercely competitive real estate industry,” Chapter President Arthur Draznin said.  “Their energy and focus are extraordinary.  Like ORT, they understand the opportunities and challenges facing today’s graduates as they enter the job market.”

Dottie Herman is the quintessential New York success story. In two decades, she has built what started as a Long Island real estate company into the pinnacle of the New York real estate world – Prudential Douglas Elliman.

Today, her domain covers nearly 4,000 real estate professionals and 650 employees working in 70 offices from Manhattan to Montauk. Under her leadership, Prudential Douglas Elliman has become an $11 billion business, and is on track to hitting $13 billion in 2006.

“I am honored to be recognized by a wonderful organization like ORT and to be acknowledged by my peers is doubly satisfying,” said Herman.  “I am particularly pleased to share this tribute with my valued friend and partner Howard Lorber. The work being done by ORT and the technically advanced technology education it offers its students worldwide is impressive.  The many doors it opens for disadvantaged young people and immigrants, provides them with the skills they need to become self-sufficient wage earners and good citizens.”

In addition to New York’s largest residential property brokerage, Herman also controls a portfolio of real estate services, including Manhattan’s largest residential property manager, Douglas Elliman Property Management, one of the state’s largest mortgage brokerages, Preferred Empire Mortgage Company, and a leading title insurer, PDE Title.

As Chairman of Prudential Douglas Elliman, Howard M. Lorber has brought his keen business acumen to the company, building it into one with unprecedented economic might and influence within the real estate industry. Mr. Lorber is also a member of the Board of Managers of Douglas Elliman Realty LLC.

“I am thrilled and excited to be selected along with Dottie as the recipient of American ORT’s Community Achievement Award,” Lorber exclaimed.   “The high quality of ORT’s schools, programs and teachers make me proud to be associated with an organization that teaches people skills which increase their chances for future success.”

Since 2001, Lorber has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Vector Group Ltd., a publicly held diversified holding company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.  He is a stockholder and a registered representative of Aegis Capital Corp., a broker-dealer and a member firm of the National Association of Security Dealers; Vice Chairman and a director of the investment banking firm Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services Inc. and Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Nathan’s Famous, Inc., a chain of fast food restaurants.  He is also a director of United Capital Corp and Prime Hospitality Corp.  Mr. Lorber has received numerous awards for his personal contributions to several nonprofit organizations and is called upon to lecture frequently on business, economic and financial topics.
